The United Kingdom is often held up as a successful example of gun control by those on the left.  But a recent poll by the Daily Telegraph, one of England’s most widely-read publications, shows Britons themselves are far from sold on the laws.

In a poll asking readers what laws they would like to see introduced or changed, an overwhelming number of voters chose “repeal the ban on hand guns and re-open shooting clubs.”

“After all, why should only criminals be ‘allowed’ to possess guns and shoot unarmed, defenceless citizens and police officers?” reader Colliemum wrote.

In a far second place came the choice for a flat tax, at 7.59% combined to 84.53% who want to repeal the ban on handguns.

The United Kingdom passed some of the strictest gun control laws in the world in 1997 after 16 children were killed in Dunblane, England.  Gun crime sharply increased in the subsequent years, doubling by 2007, according to British government crime reports.

A total of 73 applications have been submitted to police already this year.

Just 100 were submitted for the whole of 2014.

If successful, a licence would allow the applicant to carry gas-powered air guns in public in Cologne.

Under strict German gun laws only professional marksmen and registered hunters can obtain licences for real handguns.

Pepper spray is also in demand among German citizens – fearing more attacks.

One German – Daniel P – told Rheinische Post newspaper: “I think it’s good if you can defend yourself.”

Gun dealer Ulrich Schmidt said the “rush” started on January 5 when his shop reopened.

“The customers are men and women – young and old.”

Earlier this week German Chancellor Angela Merkel admitted authorities had “lost control” of the migrant crisis.

The shocking admission came just days after the New Year’s Eve sex attacks.

She warned “vulnerable” people may be hurt by migrant gangs flooding into Germany.

Meanwhile a new refugee camp – called Grande Synthe – in France is set to be filled with 8,000 migrants within four weeks.

Grand Synthe is just 30 miles from the Calais “jungle” and just seven miles from the ferry terminal – offering a direct route to Britain.

Asked why the site was chosen, one French official said: “No one else would have them.”

Another source said: “[Refugees] continue to arrive in their hundreds.

“There is nothing to suggest that numbers will diminish in the months to come.

“It is inhumane to allow them to camp out in filth and mud.”
