The City of Houston and surrounding counties are not playing around with looters taking advantage of the massive floods caused by Harvey.

“People displaced or harmed in this storm are not going to be easy prey,” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said, noting that burglarizing a home in a disaster area could carry a life sentence under Texas law. Prosecutors said at least 14 suspected looters were arrested, and Brazoria County announced a curfew in mandatory-evacuation areas for Tuesday night.

“Anyone who tries to take advantage of this storm to break into homes or businesses should know that they are going to feel the full weight of the law,” Ogg said. “Offenders will be processed around the clock without delay.”

The Montgomery County District Attorney’s office posted a warning on Monday that any looters, thieves or burglars caught victimizing area residents would be arrested and served up mandatory jail time, according to the Houston Chronicle.

As night fell Monday, emergency officials in Texas continued fielding calls from stranded residents, rescuing thousands from Harvey’s floodwaters.

“The Coast Guard is continuing to receive upwards of 1,000 calls per hour,” US Coast Guard Lt. Mike Hart said Monday. “Today alone, the Coast Guard has rescued over 3,000 people. That includes both air rescues and rescues using boats.”

Since midnight Sunday, more than 2,300 calls have poured in to the Houston Fire Department, including 400 calls for rescue Monday afternoon, Houston officials said.

Houston police had rescued 1,000 people since Monday morning, bringing the total number rescued to more than 3,000 since the storm flooded the city, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner told reporters Monday night.

Live video from Houston showed rescuers in small boats on one flooded street carrying people to higher ground.

An elementary school teacher in Indiana caught flak from parents and school administrators alike for sending a letter home warning parents to tell their children to stop talking about God, Jesus, and the devil in her classroom.
A first-grade teacher at McCordsville Elementary School sent a letter home to parents informing them that “about 5 students” had been heard talking about religion and using the words “God,” “Jesus,” and “devil,” Fox 59 reported.

“With McCordsville Elementary being a public school, we have many different religions and beliefs, and I do not want to upset a child/parent because of these words being used,” the teacher’s letter said. “If you go to church or discuss these things at home, please have a talk with your child about there being an appropriate time and place of talking about it.”

The teacher also noted that she warned the students before about discussing religion in class.

Parents were alarmed enough to contact the teacher’s superiors forcing Superintendent Shane Robbins to issue a letter calling the teacher’s missive “unfortunate” and denouncing the teacher’s actions. Robbins assured parents that their children’s First Amendment rights would not be violated in school.
