From www.kfoxtv.com:
“A University of Texas El Paso professor is speaking out against the campus weapons legislation to be in effect next year, and his actions are inspiring movements at other Texas universities.
UTEP Professor David Smith-Soto’s “no guns allowed” sign in his classroom, which Smith-Soto said is a protest against the campus carry policy in the works, is inspiring other professors to do the same.
“We’re following David at UTEP, and we put an announcement on our Facebook page,” said Joan Neuberger, a professor of history at the University of Texas. “Right now we are trying to make a statement that we’re oppose to having guns around students, and having guns on campus.”
After seeing the news about Smith-Soto, Neuberger emailed Smith-Soto.
“She told me that hearing about what we are doing here at UTEP that it then inspired them to be more active over there,” Smith-Soto said.
Neuberger’s goal is to challenge the new law of campus carry to not allow guns in the classroom.
Neuberger told Smith-Sot that she and 100 professors at UT petitioning the campus carry policy, and she’s encouraging Smith-Soto to do the same.
“It’s up to 100 professors to sign on to the idea, so I’ll do what I can to let professors know that UT is spearheading this petition drive,” Smith-Soto said.
Each college in Texas under the UT system is assigned a task force to handle its own campus carry policy. UT’s task force is currently working on its own policy on campus.
UTEP is still in the process of its campus carry policy, and sent KFOX14 this statement:
“We take the safety of our campus very seriously. A task force made up of UTEP students, faculty and staff is charged with developing the policies and procedures that will be in place once SB 11 goes into effect on September 1, 2016. Communication to our campus constituents as to what will and will not be allowed on campus is critically important and we are working tirelessly to get information finalized and distributed by the beginning of next year.”
UTEP has until the end of the year to submit its campus carry policy to the Texas Board of Regents. The policy will take effect Sept. 1, 2016.“
