Twenty-one-year-old Leo Labogen was talking loudly on the phone, while students in the University of Nebraska – Omaha library were trying to study for finals.

That’s when Brandon Valle asked Labogen to go outside of the library, if he was going to continue chatting:

Labogen responded by pulling out a knife, and that’s when Valle “knew it was a threat and this person had crossed a line. So it was time to do something about it.”

Valle, who’s spent 12 years in the U.S. Army and the ROTC program, immediately grabbed Labogen’s wrist and disarmed him after he threatened to cut students’ throats. Two other students helped Valle subdue Labogen:

The students were able to remove all three knives from him.

Paul G. Markel has worn many hats during his lifetime. He has been a United States Marine, police officer, professional bodyguard, and small arms and tactics instructor. Markel has been writing professionally for law enforcement and firearms periodicals for nearly 20 years, and has hundreds of articles in print. A regular guest on nationally syndicated radio talk shows, Markel is a subject matter expert in firearms training and use of force.
