SOTG 233 - Spoiled Brat Nation

Paul considers in great detail the state of the union and modern cry babies and tantrum throwers. When you give the toddler a cookie each time they throw a tantrum, what are you teaching them? It is far past time for responsible Americans assert their roles as adults in this nation.

The murder rate in the District of Columbia is out of control and the mayor and police chief have figured out what is to blame; high capacity magazines. Yes, we do not blame the thugs and criminals for their behavior, it is the inanimate object. We are living in the Twilight Zone folks.

From www.fox5dc.com:

D.C. is in a murder crisis this year. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Cathy Lanier have been saying that “high-capacity guns” are a major cause.

But police sources tell me that they don’t track the capacity of seized guns, so they have no reason that is the cause for the spike in homicides.

“Multiple of our cases have high-capacity magazines and multiple rounds fired making the shots more lethal,” said Chief Lanier.

Last week, I asked the chief to back up her claim.

“In D.C., over ten rounds is high capacity, but your department doesn’t trace what kind of magazine size guns have. I’m asking when you say high capacity, where are you getting that information?” I asked.

“From the guns that we’ve recovered,” Lanier responded.

“So I’m talking about 100-round drum magazines — that would be high capacity.”

She also added, “High-capacity magazines are magazines that are designed to enhance the normal capacity of a firearm.”

Then there are other specifics. No. of shots is for how many rounds of ammunition is still in the gun when the police seize it.

But there is no section for ammunition capacity on the form, which means how many rounds the gun could hold. Sources in the police department said they just don’t track it.

“Information is power, so if I don’t have anything to compare it against, I have to accept what you tell me,” said Sgt. Delroy Burton, chairman of the D.C. Police Union.

The police union said the lack of transparency is all about politics.

“I think it’s incumbent upon the citizens of the District to put pressure on their elected officials and the mayor’s office and force them to provide that information, provide a statistical breakdown,” said Burton.

The rank and file say the real cause for the murder spike is that the department is understaffed and Chief Lanier disbanded the vice units in the community.

“When she eliminated the vice units, what you hear is it created this vacuum, and that void in enforcement is being filled by the criminals who now feel much more free to walk around with illegal guns, sell drugs, gamble in public places,” Burton said.

With no tangible numbers, the question the public needs to know is why the mayor and police chief are now blaming guns with high-capacity magazines? We will continue to ask for the statistics on the murder crisis in D.C. and we will report what we find.

From www.wusa9.com:

As D.C. police officials try new tactics to curb the startling rise in the number of homicides so far this year in the District, many residents are struggling to explain a cause for the sudden increase.

There have been 98 homicides in D.C. so far this year, an increase of almost 35 percent from this time last year.

“She was a beautiful girl. Oh lord, she could do everything,” Michelle Johson, who lost her daughter Tenika Fontanelle in a triple shooting in Southeast D.C. Tuesday said.

Friends of Fontanelle, who was a mother of two, have built a shrine to honor their friend killed a week shy of her 32nd birthday.

Fontanelle was killed during a triple shooting Tuesday on Congress Street SE that also wounded her 12-year-old. Kevin Lee, 17, was arrested and charged as an adult with first-degree murder in Fontanelle’s death. Lee was also shot during the incident, but police did not explain how.

“I live right here [near Fontanelle’s house]. She’d be in that kitchen. ‘What you in there cooking?’ I say, ‘don’t you worry, I bring you some out,'” Sheron Savoy, a friend of Fontanelle, said.

Police say the shooting stemmed from an argument between Lee and the 12-year-old, but motives in the other shootings have varied widely. The lack of an explanation for the violence came to a head Wednesday night during a community meeting about the increase in killings.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier has recently blamed the increase in homicides on access to illegal guns and increased the reward on information about these guns from $1,000 to $2,500. Nonetheless, some rank and file officers believe there is only so much the police can do to prevent homicides.

“Maybe everybody needs to get in touch with their roots. And see what it is to be family,” Johnson said.

D.C. is far from the only city that has seen a jump in the murder rate this year. Baltimore and Houston have also had violent years so far, with Baltimore’s murder rate Thursday surpassing that of New York City despite having a population 13 times smaller.
