“A tenured professor at the University of Texas says he will not teach next year because the new law allowing for concealed handguns at public universities has left him fearing for his safety.
Economics Professor Daniel Hamermesh says he teaches required courses that draw hundreds of students and it would be difficult to identity one who may be disgruntled or has a mental disorder.
The Austin American-Statesman reports that some faculty have threatened to leave over the law that takes effect Aug. 1, but Hamermesh appears to be the first to have followed through.
The law allows campuses to carve out “reasonable” gun-free zones, provided they don’t effectively ban guns entirely.“

Paul G. Markel has worn many hats during his lifetime. He has been a United States Marine, police officer, professional bodyguard, and small arms and tactics instructor. Markel has been writing professionally for law enforcement and firearms periodicals for nearly 20 years, and has hundreds of articles in print. A regular guest on nationally syndicated radio talk shows, Markel is a subject matter expert in firearms training and use of force. Markel has been teaching safe and effective firearms handling to students, young and old, for decades and has also worked actively with 4H Shooting Sports programs. Markel holds numerous instructor certifications in multiple disciplines; nonetheless, he is, and will remain a dedicated Student of the Gun.

To all the professors who are quitting because they dont trust their fellow citizens I have three insights to share. #1. Paranoia will annoya. #2. Better put more distance than off campus behind you due to your proximate location to all the concealed carriers that frequent places you likely go shopping like Walmart and church and all public spaces and your neighbors. Oh okay leave the country 40% of your fellow countryman own guns. Depart our country if your “fear” i.e. your political intolerance and ideological rigidity justify leaving campus you must leave the country since the rest of us are armed #3. If you have genuine fear and aren’t leaving the country which is only logical since all your neighbors are armed to the teeth and you aren’t just being a pouting ideological pick trying to be a martyr of some sort, seek professional psychiatric help. 48,000 are slaughtered on the highways every year and I bet you drive a car. You need real help. BTW you disgust me.
